Trefoil Girl Scout Theme for the 2009-10

Trefoil Girl Scouts will incorporate our "a better world...Inspired by U" theme into troop and service area events for 2009-10.  This theme will be part of our 2010 Cookie Sale from Little Brownie Bakers.

Our troops are following the GS Law to "Make the World a Better Place" by finding out ways we can make a difference in our families, our schools, our communities and our world.  We remind everyone that "Change begins with U!"  Watch for more details as we plan our 2009-2010 events!   The new Journey series "It's Your Planet - Love It!"  is perfect for reinforcing our annual theme.

Girl Scouts Discover, Connect and Take Action on important projects that can have an impact on the entire world one girl at a time!

You will find some of the work Trefoil members have done below as a part of last year's theme :  Imagine if...We all Go Green...We could change the world.

Watch for more information about NEW projects for 2009-2010.

Go Green Ideas

Below are ideas from the girls who attended "Girls Go Green" in North Park on Nov. 1st

bulletPick up trash; don't litter!
bulletTurn off the light when leaving a room
bulletTurn off the water while brushing your teeth or washing your hands.
bulletDon't let the hose run
bulletTake shorter showers
bulletUse both sides of paper while drawing
bulletWrite to companies and congressional representatives to ask them to require that manufacturers provide a way to recycle or reuse their products so that we decrease the amount of trash that goes into our landfills.
bulletWrite to Congress to ask them to write a law requiring manufacturers to decrease the amount of packaging by 50% on all their products.
bulletReuse printed paper; print on the other side.
bulletPlant trees
bulletBuy organic and eco-friendly cleaning products and personal hygiene products so that we do not pollute our soil and water with dangerous chemicals or hormones.
bulletUse eco-friendly products such as rechargeable batteries and CFL light bulbs to decrease the amount of trash in our landfills and decrease our energy consumption.
bulletRecycle more products
bulletAsk pharmacies to sponsor a program to safely dispose of out of date or unused over the counter and prescription drugs so they do not end up polluting our water supply.
bulletWater the plants
bulletDon't cut down trees
bulletRecycle trash, sneakers, paper, crayons, water bottles or anything else that is recyclable.
bulletMake art out of trash
bulletUse lunch packs instead of paper bags; use plastic reusable containers for lunches instead of one-use Ziploc bags which are thrown away.
bulletStop purchasing one-serving size items such as applesauce or lunchables which increase the amount of trash we throw away each day.  Use containers that can be washed out and reused instead.
bulletRecycle papers and plastics that don't have bad chemicals in them.
bulletMake jewelry out of newspaper
bulletDo not put pop-rings in water; cut them up, so they do not endanger animals
bulletMake compost piles
bulletAsk Congress to ban the use of dangerous plastics that leach unsafe chemicals into our landfills and water supply in favor of safe recyclables.
bulletDo a service project to clean the side of the road (adopt a road)
bulletMake newspaper clothing, and decorate it!
bulletUse extra paper to heat your house
bulletAsk companies to use green products instead of harmful ones
bulletSpread the word about recycling
bulletAsk manufacturers and Congress to ban one-time use batteries; allow only rechargeable batteries.
bulletDon't waste paper
bulletEncourage low prices for eco-friendly products by purchasing them - the more we buy, the greater the demand on the manufacturer, the higher the demand for these products, the lower the price becomes.
bulletInstead of using plastic shopping bags, use reusable ones for groceries and other products.
bulletDon't use brown bags for lunches
bulletWhen you catch a fish, let it go, do not disrupt the food chain
